Eastern Ontario Local Food Conference - 4th Annual

November 24-25, 2014
Four Points by Sheraton, Kingston, ON

This Year’s Theme: Niche to Mainstream

A decade ago, critics said that a growing consumer interest in local food would never be more than a small niche in the agricultural economy. Today, we see more and more organizations recognizing the power of local food in their communities. That’s why this year’s theme for the Eastern Ontario Local Food Conference is “Local Food: Niche to Mainstream”. The program will be focused on tools needed to manage growth to create a sustainable local food system. As always, the topics presented will provide participants with best practices, tools and resources, and contacts for potential collaborations. A lively trade show and a local food tour will again be a part of this year’s conference.

Move to Eastern Ontario

Rural development in Ontario East is, more than ever before, linked to entrepreneurship. Promoting entrepreneurship opportunities is seen as a strategic development intervention that could accelerate the rural development process. Entrepreneurship stands as a vehicle to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities and to sustain a healthy economy and environment.

In Ontario East there are growing opportunities for investment in historic downtown redevelopment, farm-gate produce processing and sales, microbreweries, wineries, and culinary entrepreneurship and many more commercial activities where Ontario East provides a competitive advantage.

New Food Premises Operations (seasonal or fixed)

Farmers’ markets and special events (such as barbeques, fairs, sidewalk sales, trade shows, charity events, etc.) often set up temporary food service premises away from kitchen facilities or in outdoor locations. It is mandatory for anyone operating a special event to notify the local health unit prior to operation. A special event application must be filled out prior to operation.

Harvest Hastings

The Harvest Hastings Board has commissioned Kathryn A. Wood of the Natural Captial Resources Inc to prepare a Strategic Plan for Harvest Hastings to guide us over the next three  years.

The objective of the survey is to gather stakeholder feedback on priorities for the next three years (2014‐2017), as well as the areas/issues on which Harvest Hastings should focus. A summary of these results, along with draft recommendations for strategies that would help Harvest Hastings act on the findings, would be provided to and discussed with the project Steering Committee.

She has developed a short online survey http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/kathryn-wood/harvest-hastings-strategic-planning-survey/?code=t
